FORMAT FACTORY - The White Surface and the Black Fabric : physical and cultural ground
Geological Ground
This process of finding relations between seemingly disjunct narratives and objects challenges the notion of originality in order to create new myths. The stone block quarried in format factory can be used both as a geological ground for the arrangement of objects and cultural ground for the arrangement of ideas. The architect shapes identity through the relation to the objects by formatting them in a constant negotiation between opening up or framing them as content.
Cultural Ground
The architect is reading and assembling figures
on and as ground, presenting a sequence of
events within a vertical plane and a constellation of
images on a horizontal plane.
Likewise, the the cultural theorist Aby Warburg's
ground was the black canvas.
He attempted ''to map the pathways that give
art history and cosmography their pathos-laden
meanings'' in the Mnemosyne Atlas.
In this process, he was relying on the concept of
memory and the logic of the ''pathos formula''.
