The following case study of the 'Kolumba Museum Cologne' by Peter Zumthor (2007) shows an investigation of the concept of the ruin at an architectural scale.

Cologne, a city which was largely destroyed during World War II, might today be considered as 'the capital of culture' of Germany and supports many history and art museums.
The Kolumba Museum was commissioned by the Cologne Archdiocese and was completed by Peter Zumthor in 2007. The museum exhibits objects from late antiquity to present 20th-century art pieces, mostly in a religious context.
