ERASED CITY - Foundation along the river Thames : from Londinium to London

London (lat. Londinium) was established by Emperor Claudius as a small Roman town in approximately AD60, after the invasion of Britain by the Romans in AD43.
Its location on the river Thames was chosen due to the deep river bed and stable banks on the north side of the river, compared to the mudflats and shallow banks found further upriver.
Another important part of the city lay south of the river, on the only island that did not flood at high tide. The site was accessible from the ocean by ships for trade and was defensible against potential attacks by the native population.
